I could not agree more, Jim. Destroying these great pieces of sports history is disgraceful and almost criminal. I like the Mona Lisa analogy. Who would think that that would be a good thing? How about the Declaration of Independence? There are lots of good signatures there.

Well, not to argue but there is more than one Joe Jackson bat. Regards to Mona Lisa and Declaration, that's it, that's the only one. Buuuuuut you can argue about I think they cut up Josh Gibson's only known bat.

Regardless, it's still ridiculous, can't hold that bat in your hands now anymore, swing it, and sort of re-live the past anymore thinking "wow, Joe did some work with this"...

Donruss cut this bat up in the early 2000s. There are not many bats being processed by the companies at this point as the modern hobby simply has moved on.

Actually, I don't think that is true. I think there were two. Now there is one. Maybe the bat collectors know more about this. There was the black betsy and one other that sold a couple of years ago (this one?).

There is a video on youtube somewhere of the "room" where all this cut up stuff is kept. They have the raw items to be cut waiting their doom. they show some jerseys and bats and stuff. (big names like Babe Ruth, etc.) It's like death row only for sports memorabilia. But the guy who worked there and ran the "room" was excited as heck that they were making these 'collectibles' available to the hobby.

Not true about the Declaration. There are a few known examples, but none the less still a disgrace to destroy history for monetary gain. I do think a wacked up Wagner is a good idea though. That card is over valued anyways and not all that "RARE." Plank should be valued well above Wagner IMO.

I think HOF Auto Rookies was referring to the copy that was actually signed on or around July 4, 1776, not the Dunlap broadside which was the first published copy of the document.

Certain items should not be cut up like they are. Its hard to say what shouldnt. But Topps says they know what collectors want, and I wish our voice was stronger on saying please do not cut up a 1/1 josh gibson bat. Thats what it was until you cut it up. Now I wont buy a pack of 2000 whatever the year is pack!.
