The 1907 Canton team that Marquard played for was the Canton Chinamen and not Canton Grays.
(If, however, this is the correct team Marquard is the player at the far right, squatting, and wearing a dark jersey.) Last edited by Jacklitsch; 04-27-2012 at 06:22 PM. |

Hi Steve,
I think the guy squatting has a catcher's mitt. BTW, here's another 1907 Canton postcard that I'm pretty sure has Rube (I think he's 5th from left in back row): ![]() Robert S Last edited by VintageBall; 04-27-2012 at 06:34 PM. Reason: Added date. |

Hi Rob:
My screen is so small I missed the mitt. You are certainly correct with the PC you posted. Rube was tall, some 6'3" and the facial features are spot on. |

Let's just say the mitt in the first PC was "strategically located."
What are a bunch of grown men doing blowing up 100 year old pictures and scouring them thusly. ? ! |

You are absolutely correct on the postcard that you posted, Robert. I'm quite certain that Marquard does not appear on the other though. My guess is that it is not even the same Canton team pictured in the first postcard as the second. The "Canton" is in longer, thinner letters on the top postcard and more square, block letters on the second.

For those keeping track, another example of the 1907 Canton postcard has surfaced. There's no doubt it was issued in 1907 because it bears a 1907 postmark. See the E section of the BST for the images I just posted. http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...28#post1335828
