Here's a psa article detailing the set:

http://www.psacard.com/articles/arti...tml?artid=5122

An excerpt in the article says... "The veteran collector has, however, seen an unfolded, empty wax box. This box and the fact that he has seen wax stains on cards are "clues" that these originated from wax packs.

Here is a link to a closed auction from Legendary Auctions for a 71 Greatest Moments Display Box:

http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...x?lotid=103600

It is interesting how the display box doesn't show a picture of an actual pack with a wrapper on the outside of it.

Here is a link to a guy who has the box...maybe he can lead you in the right direction. His name is unopenedpackguy.

Here's the scan of the box, I've never seen a wrapper nor a scan either, and haven't even seen a card with a wax stain. There are some uncut sheets floating around

Does anybody have a scan of a card from this set with a wax stain?

Two thoughts after looking more closely at the photos from the Legendary Auction.

1) The box reads 24 ct. It can only be assumed that the box was created for packs considering the box would be too big if it merely contained 24 individual cards.

2) The box also reads "bubble gum". For gum to be distributed with a card(s) they would have had to have been wrapped/packaged together.

Here's a great article from the blowout cards forum:

http://www.blowoutcards.com/forums/b...topps-did.html

This gentleman in the article who worked for Topps, Sy Berger, he would undoubtedly know if wax packs and wrappers existed...

Spoke with a guy tonight who is an acquaintance of Sy Berger. He said Mr. Berger did not have answer on this issue.

By the way, I'm starting to think I'm talking to myself on this issue.

Default Wrapper

I wish I had some information to add. So you know you're not alone, I'll just say I love the set and just picked up Kaline on Sunday.

Cheers!

Hi guys,

I am also working on this set...if anyone has doubles to sell/trade let me know.

Also, I have had four or five cards with a wax stain. All were on front center of picture. Pic of card below. Wax was very heavy on all cards and much more than I have seen from standard cards.

Jeff

4 Reals--you may be talking to yourself, but from my standpoint it is an interesting conversation nonetheless

I used to be very big into this set and have owned 100's of these cards. I have definitely seen many with wax stains - always on the front. I have never actually seen a wrapper though. I have no doubt they were distributed in packs in some limited way. However, there was a large "warehouse find" many of which had water damage, so it seems many of the surviving cards probably never made it into packs.

+1 for a Colt sighting!

The only place I ever saw these offered were from Richard Gelmans catalog. Given that his warehouse had a big fire in the late '70's, that might explain the water damage they are often found with.
Strange that they are so often found with wax stains yet a wrapper has never surfaced (to the best of my knowledge) and only 1 box. I"m not doubting they were ever found in packs given the wax stains, but wonder if they were issued in a wrapper that doesn't indicate Greatest Moments, perhaps in Topps typical white test wrapper.

Definitely one of my all time favorite sets.

Here is a link to the scans of my old set that I no longer own (also has scans of the uncut sheets and box - I never owned those):

Interesting thought Griffins! Especially considering that those who have found wax on the cards reported it being a heavier dose of wax compared to what's found on traditional wax packs. What other Topps test sets come to mind that used this white test wrapper? Forgive my ignorance but I've never seen what one looks like....

Here's a few- basically they just stuck white wax paper and slammed a sticker on it.

I opened a lot of '71 supers as a kid and never saw a GM. In fact, other than in Gelman's catalog I never saw a GM at all- not in CA., not at any of the shows in the mid '70's.

Anthony--I got my initial set via the Card Collector's Company Catalog. Obviously, no gum stains. If there were packs, even white ones like you show or the 68 3Ds, hard to believe one has not surfaced in some condition...unless there was just one test box...but that would not explain all the people who say they have cards with gum stains. A real mystery

Thanks for posting the scans Griffins and Al. My first six months on this site has been more educational to me than the decade of collecting before.

Hey Griffins, any chance you might be willing to crack open one of those graded packs and report the amount of wax you see to compare it to those with wax on the GM's, lol? Just a joke...

Joseph--I don't think Anthony got the joke...he is so obtuse.

He says the same thing about giving me some of his packs

Just Curious but what would the complete set go for if any popped up for sale?
Thanks Chris N

Al, you never know what the future (or FedEx) will bring.
