Default Show me your W572's

Just picked up the Ruth white stock version so wanted to see what others where out there.

Default W572 revisited

Looking at Brad's recent pickup (hi Brad) of his white stock version of Ruth, it made me wonder if there are any other stock variations? There has to be a yellow'ish one somewhere? Or maybe other types of printing, other than this "metro star" text, on the borders? Or maybe there are other colors of players, other than red or the regular printing of black-gray'ish?

No problem at all Leon happy to have the company. Great variations!

I'm interested to see my newest Ruth grades but regardless I'm happy with it. I've yet to see another white gloss version maybe they are common and I just was not looking hard enough. Would LOVE to find a red or other tint version.

Also I did notice on the white stock Ruth that it is the same printing technique but the contrast on this one is way higher than on the cheaper looking card stock.

Have about half on white stock and half on darker stock with no duplicates? Have been looking for the remaining at a fair price and buying upgrades to have birders on all trimmed cards. Selling off trimmed cards as I find better cards. As you see, collection is only in raw form. Have not liberated any from slabs yet.

Very nice! This is the only Ruth I have seen on the gloss stock didn't know if you had one or not as well. I'm looking for Walter J. if you ever find one in good condition let me know if you don't want it. Great cards again!

Don't have Ruth or Johnson yet and Cobb is currently on eBay. Have a budget I'm trying to stay in and 1921 E121 Graded Yankees and Giants keep presenting themselves (1921 World Series collection). Great set to collect as they are fairly affordable.

You can find them at a pretty good price. The first one in my photo that is graded I bought on ebay for under $300 raw about a month ago. It's the second highest graded one in SGC or PSA with only a 5 graded higher.

The new white version is much sharper than that so I would be surprised if it didn't grade well.

Thought about it but seller's feedback wasn't very high so guess I sort of missed out. :-). Are you collecting the entire set? If so, how far along are you?

No just some of the stars out of the set. I mainly collect, Ruth, Gehrig and Cobb out of any set. I just think this is one of the nicer strip card series but was always curious about variations and why some are on cheap stock while others are on the nice high gloss stock.

Yeah his feedback and pictures were not good. Those always seem to be the best buys.

If you send it in and get it graded, would be interested to see what it comes back as. As to the question of high gloss vs cheaper stock, good question that I do not have the answer to. I like the set as it is a sister set to E121.

Nice one HB! As you can see I'm partial to that one too.

Ken I like that its a sister set as well. Interesting though that the Cobb is the only one that doesn't you the same photo from that set.

Leon: Do you know why there are the different stocks in this set? I guess I would understand if it were a set done over a period of a few years but from everything I've ever seen its pretty solid as 1923.

Didn't know that about Cobb and E121. Fortunate for me, I only collect the Yankees and Giants from E121-80 and E121-120. The Ruth cards are the only crazy expensive cards that make E121 hard for me.

Actually W572 cards share the same photos as seen in the E120 American Caramel set. I prefer them (and W573's for that matter) over the E120 set because they do not have the green and sepia overlay which I feel detracts from the overall appeal. Also they lack the overly fancy borders of the E120 set, another positive in my mind.

Actually, many of the pictures in E120 are also used in E121 and W572 cards. The overly ornate fronts of the E120 are like a snooty stepsister for the E121 and W572 cards. LOL

Default Two toots for snoot

Valid point Ken, but all the photos in the W572 (except the Cobb) can be found in the E120 set, which makes these sets more closely aligned compared to the E121's.

Despite the snootiness, I still collect the E120 cards as well...I guess I am not too picky when it comes to vintage cards.

I have cards for E121-80, E121-120, w573,w501, E120, V100, and W575-1 of Elmer Miller and all of these cards use the same photo. If he were in W572, I am sure the same picture would have been used. I am partial to the E121 style cards over the E120 style cards by a mile but like you, I am a prewar junkie. :-)

Great discussion guys. I just think its interesting how they all overlap one another. Being a graphic designer you have to wonder what the royalties where like for these photos. But correct me if I'm wrong but I think the E120's do have the copyright but the E121's don't.

I'll know by the end of next week what/if it grades, so I will let you know for sure. It's probably one of the best ones I have seen. My other one is really nice but the print defect bugs me but doesn't at the same time, if that makes any sense. lol

Great Cobb. I've noticed they are hard to come by for sure. Seems the stars in this set, and correct me if I'm wrong, I don't see very many for sale often.

It's interesting that strip cards would grade like those in the last post. By definition they are cut from a strip of 10 cards so they are trimmed. Guess its a matter of who did the best job trimming the cards. Personally I am in the camp where strip cards should have an authentic grade. :-)

Came across this one Rogers Hornsby. I might put it up on the B/S/T. If someone is in need of it let me know!

Default Copyright Variations

Can any of you advanced W572 collectors verify the various number of copyright variations? I have seen four variations:

1) The easy to find 'S' which is preceded by the copyright symbol containing an "I" and an "F" within the copyright circle. What does the "S" or "IFS" stand for?
2) "U+U", which I presume is Underwood & Underwood
3) "FM", which I presume is Felix Mendelsohn.
4) "P+A, which I do not know what it stands for. Does anyone?

Are there more?
