Default T205 Honest Long Cut w/Stars

I recently purchased this T205 Honest Long Cut and Noticed that thieir were little stars across the top of the back. Does anyone have one like this. I am mostly a T206 Collector and any info on this Honest Long Cut would be appreciated.

Thanks
John P

Never seen it and my initial guess is it was done after it was manufactured. Ya' never know though, I (and most of the board) have seen some freaky stuff.

My first reaction was that it was done after the fact as well except the ink looks like a close match to the back ink and the alignment of the stars make them look as though they were cut after stamping. Interesting.

Default stars

The stars are a little blotchy, not crisp like the original printing. You should be able to easily check it out with a loupe. My guess is a rubber or wooden stamper.

100% agree with Rick. I seen this card a few yrs back at National in Chicago. Passed it up at the time but I have to say I am more intrigued now than before. Nice card!!

Default T205 w/stars

Thanks to all that replied. I still cant tell after looking at the card Closely if it was originally printed with the card or stamped after. Does anyone else have a card with the same mark or stamp. I only have 3 T205 and This is the Only Honest Long Cut that I own so I was not sure if this was a part of the back design. I only purchased it to display with a full Honest Long Cut Pack that I picked up at a junk store.

Regards

Whats in the pack? I am almost 100% certain that they are added after the fact. Way to close to the border outline to have printed on the sheet. The ink on the card is to bold to match the stamps that are blotchy. To bad it's not a T206. That would be the next 100k variation!! Lmao

Default T205

The Honest Long Cut Pack is full of tobacco. It has never been opened.
I think it is before the T205' S WERE Inserted. I was told that the pack is from the 1890's. I picked up the card at a show just to display next to the pack. I mainly collect T206 But wanted a T205 W/an HLC back. The card was very cheap no premium for the stars. Ha Ha

John-

From the scans, it appears that the pack is much later... certainly not 1890s (note the successor language on the front). If you have a scan of the tax stamp, we can date it for sure. Just based on the graphics, however, I'd say 1930s. Still a great companion piece!

I can't find the thread, but there was one many years ago about this type of mark (or similar). I have a 1921 Exhibit with similar stars (asterisk). It was suggested that they were done with a typewriter. Not that the card was placed in typewriter, but typed on an intermediate medium, then transferred to card. May be the same, may be not, just a thought (I have very few ).

Typewriter is my guess. I used to have a 1939 Play Ball Williams that someone had very neatly typed "Ted Williams" across the front bottom. The card was not creased or 'rolled'. I think I know why. My father had one of the old mechanical typewriters, and it was possible to place a baseball card partially in and type across it without rolling it under and creasing it.

I did not type on the Williams, in case anyone wondered.

Jon,
Thanks for your input on the Honest Long Cut Pack. I will trust your dating on the pack as you are one of the experts in this field. I picked it up for $5.00 at a Shop in my town and it looks Great displayed with the card and other packs/cards that I have including the Full Obak pack that I got from you. Cant wait to get the other one.

Regards

And a steal at that price, especially considering it's survived 90 years full.
