| "spectacular, original" fake cabinet photo

A quick contribution to calling out reprints -- This seller has been selling some interesting early photos; but this one has red flags, notably that it is an 1870s image on an 1880s/1890s mount, the wear on the photo doesn't match the wear on the mount, and most important, the image comes from a CDV sold in a Cowan's auction in 2005. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SPECTACULAR-...-/381281653706 http://www.cowanauctions.com/auction....aspx?id=23928 |

Reputable dealer. I would message him with concern.

Yes, wrote him a message before posting. (Though did not wait for a response, which maybe I should have.) Thank you.

+1 Also, I believe Jon also takes consignments, and if it is a fake, may simply be unaware.

To finish: Seller responded quickly and nicely, had another person send in concerns, too. "the last thing I ever want to do is sell something that is not what I believe it to be." Nice response. A few years ago at a flea market in NYC a seller had a stack of dozens of old cabinet cards with freshly printed native american images glued onto them -- they looked pretty convincing, except for the too-good-to-be-true nature of them. After a pause, the guy said, I'm just selling those as reproductions. David |

Jon, the seller, is a super nice guy. He has a great sense of humor too. I have known him for around 15 yrs...... A good ole collector/dealer from San Antonio. One of the good guys for sure.
