Default What Would You Pay? Lou Gehrig Collage

For those who have bought card art collages...

Someone wants to buy my Lou gehrig collage. It's 16x20. took me 80 hours to complete (because I'd never made one before). already framed. I think I've got $300 in expenses into it. Buyer is local, so no shipping. What would you charge for it? I want to be realistic.

I submitted it into my local fair, and someone at the fair left their name and number to contact.20230919_181114.jpg

I would say if you can break even you should be happy.

I get that yours is actually nicer than many others that do the same thing. The single layer is amazing but no idea how much more cash it would bring selling. I do think if you started doing more of them to get your name out there you could charge way more than the break even price for that size/quality.

Please post if you sell it and for how much.

You need to value your time. Selling at the cost of supplies is selling yourself short. That is not 'break even' that is loss leader. I believe you should want people to respect the time and effort you invested, not just the financial outlay. At least $750.

I was about to say the same thing. If he can get it for the supplies, then let him create it himself! I have been "cheap" numerous times thinking why would I pay that when I can do it myself.....

until i try - lol! then i pay, happily!!!!

I would say triple your supply cost, hell I pay that for tile work.

excellent work BTW!

Depending on which state you live minimum wage is $5.15 to $15 dollars per hr.

Minimum wage plus the cost of supplies= lowest you should charge IMO. So I would sell ~$750-$1500.

FWIW, fast food workers in CA will now make $20/hour.

I'd set the price at $795 but would be open to negotiation. Don't take less than $650 for it. Nice work... Best of luck!

Regardless of whatever price you agree to sell it for, congratulations on what you've produced. Well done.

This sounds about right. Do not sell for break-even; don't disrespect yourself.

Beautiful job. I also think about $800.00 or more with the expectation of negotiations. But nothing lower than what others have said at $650.00.
Again, nice work!

How did you get to $300 in expenses? Is it mostly the frame and are you selling just the collage or framed? My price was for just the art work. I have one almost that exact size and eight others I have purchased unframed.

I also have trouble figuring my time, both on stuff I'm fairly new and slow at, and things where I'm fairly fast or "special" jobs.

And, a song that may help a bit.

Here is the good song instead of a bunch of short repeated clips. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HlhlkG4mBE

I've thought about doing one of those with Marshall / Randy Moss. Looks fun and I'm a pretty decent hand with an xacto (from years in advertising, not trimming cards).

Thiswas the first one I made. I bought two unopened wax boxes of 1990 Topps pretty cheap. I think it was $40 including shipping. I then needed an Xacto knife. The first one I bought (off brand) I couldn't buy replacement blades. So then I bought another X-acto plus blades. I bought a 16x20 canvas at Hobby Lobby, plus multiple rolls of double sided tape. I tried glue first, but after the 5th piece I started realizing I was already trapped in hell. Once I got to the roof of the stadium I decided I wanted to make it only using yellow YANKEES team names. I didn't have enough from my two boxes, so then I had to buy team sets on Ebay, but couldn't buy bulk, so I had to pay close to $10/set when you factor shipping and tax. I also experimented with scissors. The first pair I bought -- cheap -- wouldn't cut cleanly at the point, so then I tried a different brand = expensive. Those went dull, so then I bought another pair. But a sharp pair of scissors makes a difference! I asked artists how to seal it. Someone recommended mod podge, so I used that. But then my professional artist friend said mod podge is like the cheap pair of scissors. So then I bought Acryllic medium and sealed it again. Framing cost $60. It all comes to approximately $300.

The Barry Larkin I made came to $500 in expenses when I factor in the auto and shipping to and from the private signing.

Tim---That piece is beautiful! Why are you selling it? I would aim for $2500 and negotiate down a little.

Tim looks like if the person who left the note doesn't buy it you should list it in the BST $1 starting bid section.

If I was the one who created this piece of art, I would not sell it. I would hang it in my own home.

If you sell it for a few hundred dollars, the money will be gone in no time. The art would last forever. Keep it hanging.

Update: Interested party and I made contact on Wednesday. I offered a price of $1600. Buyer has not responded, did not counter. I guess they were shocked.

I would guess they were extremely shocked. I have 9 cut card pieces I purchased. I have 8 of them in a cool large display in my living room. Almost everyone including my wife say they look like a small childs school art project. They are all shocked to hear what I paid for them.

I know if I could make something as cool as your Lou Gehrig I wouldn't have paid for mine.
