How tough are these sets?

M101-4/101-5 - I know they have a bunch of different backs, but how hard would it be to get the most common George Sisler or Jim Thorpe from these sets?

1917 Collins and McCarthy - How tough is the Hornsby?

1928 Yuengling's Ice Cream?

Also how tough is the Joe Jackson e91 Caramel?

the thorpe card will be very difficult...there aren't many of them and a high demand...i know of no e91 jackson card...it probably wouldn't look like him anyway.

As Peter said, the Thorpe is very difficult. I have not seen any for individual cards for sale in the last few years. The Sisler can be found occasionally.

The Collins McCarthy Hornsby is from a set that is more difficult than it is given credit for. Since I believe the card is considered to be Hornsby's rookie card it may be tough to find. A Boston Store card (parallel set) may be easier, but still difficult.

The E90-1 Jackson can be found as there seems to be one in every other major auction. But the value is creeping up towards 10K for even the lowest grades.

I have no idea about Yuenglings.

Thorpe was in very few sets during his playing days and this is probably his most desirable card for collectors. Also, the card was only in the m101-5 set and not issued in the m101-4 set. While this does not make it scarce by any means, it makes the card more difficult to obtain than most m101-4/5 cards. Plus it's a great card and most collectors are reluctant to part with it.

Thorpe is on three cards by himself as a baseball player, two as a major leaguer. The m101-5, Zeenut and the e270 Colgan Tin Top which is a truly rare card. As mentioned, the m101-5 is not a true rarity, but it has a very high demand and very low turn over rate. I was lucky enough to finally obtain one a few years ago. This card will go nowhere until I die. It is the centerpiece of my collection. I don't track major auctions all that closely, but if memory serves me right, there have been just as many Zeenut's of Thorpe offered as there have been m101-5s in the past 5 years.

Very cool card, I just noticed the Thorpe from buying that massive SCD price guide and looking for the highest priced cards in some sets, and seeing the Thorpe as the most expensive in the M101-5 set.

I noticed that few of the key cards from the M101-4/M101-5 come up for auction. Does this speak to their rarity or to their popularity? I would really like to find a Sisler at some point.

Don't put too much weight in the prices you see there. Most of us would buy @ 2-3 or more times those values in the SCD for the M101-4/5.


Thorpe could also be found on the Fatima team card of the NY Giants, generally a less expensive way of getting him into your collection.

The cheapest vintage card to get is his Sports King card, but he depicted as a football player. I've never subscribed to the idea that team photos are part of player's set of cards. For the most part, you can't really make out the player unless it's a larger picture.

I think M101-4/101-5s are very underrated. I picked up a Wagner last year that I think is great. Perhaps their popularity will increase. The Sport Kings Thorpe is great, but the M101 is very cool.

I haven't seen any zeenut thorpes
and have seen a few m101's
I guess that once someone gets one
they tend to hang on to them
same as the jacksons
