Default T206 - For you, which one is THE Card?

Posted By: Jason L

I suppose collectors of T206 may answer this differently than those who observe it from afar, but who knows, let's ask and see.

In the T206 set, out of all the cards, which one do you consider to be THE Card? meaning, your favorite. The one that defines the set to you.

If it's the Wagner, that's fine, but I am not talking about just value. I'm talking about what is the most important to YOU. (It may be value, and that's fine).

For me, the T206 is this card: Lajoie with bat

For me it's always been this card, to me there is no better pose in T206.

I will say though that this card as of late has really been growing on me as great pose...but in the end i love them all picking one is so hard!

This was the first T206 I ever purchased, for $1 in a Buffalo card store in the 1980's. This isn't the same one, but needed an example to show. The card in question was destroyed many years ago, but its memory lingers on. Long live Rube!

Paul,

Good call. It's a very rare day when I forget a player's death date (let alone as awful an example as this one!). Error corrected!

...was because if Kisinger had been alive into the 1970's, I would have had him on my autographed T206 radar.

My quintessential T206 is probably this one, though it is really hard to pick favorites...

it's so tuff for me to pick "THE" T206 card, i've loved this set for nearly 20 years...here's one my favorites...it was my first PSA 9 pose i ever owned (since sold)...i now have this card raw, in mid-grade, and love it just the same...

FYI, here's what i've been up to recently...working on an attractive mid-grade raw set...

John,

That one is loads nicer than the one I owned--beautiful back, too. Mine was simply a lowly Sweet Cap which would grade a "0" after its surprise encounter with a kitten all those years ago! Although I like the Kisinger because it was my first T206, it's also actually a great image.

Paul,

There's actually a reason why I always have "1971" stuck in my head. It was a misprint in an old reference book I owned as a kid. For many years I just assumed the book was correct. I did learn of the actual 1941 date several years back, but Kisinger comes up so infrequently in conversation that my mind apparently reverted back to the erroneous DOD!

John,

I have no intention to ever part with that Matty. I locked myself in by naming my second son Mathewson (we call him Matty for short). Moreover, when I was in high school in the late 1980's I had a friend who had purchased a Matty portrait out of an old SCD advertisement. He wouldn't ever let me see it since I had a knack for finding minute flaws in seemingly perfect cards. So when I began my own collection of T206 cards in the late 1990s, this was one of the first ones I went for -- originally in a PSA 6 holder and for about $800. I overpaid a little at the time, but the card was so clean and crisp.

Jodi,

I don't know if you're a Monty Python fan, but it is impossible for me to pass over an image of the T206 Kisinger and not think of the obscure Python song, with the chorus, "Henry Kissin-gah, I'm missin-yah...."

To me, this is easily the most curious card in the set, as it's the only one that looks as if the chief illustrator allowed his 8 year-old son to draw it. If Spike raised his arms straight up in the air, his elbow would barely be at his ear. I also dig the gigantic face topped by what looks to be a size 6 cap.

and the lack of detailed facial features make that Shannon a truly unusual card. Thanks for sharing...I had not seen that one before.

Edited to add:
I might add that upon further inspection, this card may be a very strong addition to the "Industrial Buildings at Sunset" subset that I am checklisting!

I always liked the Shaw card (tough common) but I always wondered did the artist get it right or wrong, if right poor Shaw goes down as the goofy toofy's winner for the T206 set that's a rough set of choppers.

I always liked the Shannon card some folks hate it and I agree the subject is rough but the background is one of the best in the set.

For me, there are actually two. When I was eight years old we went to Arizona to visit some of my dad's cousins. One of their teenage sons was a baseball card collector and he gave me two T206s.

These aren't my actual cards. I found these on the web. Mine are in MUCH worse shape.

This is the first one.

This is the other one.

No doubt. Germany Scheafer, my first T206, about 20 years ago because I thought it would be fun to own one. Now I own hundreds, but this beater's still special. And if you haven't heard the name, check him out in Lawrence Ritter's "The Glory of their Times."
