Thanks for sharing the story Brian. Have you seen the 2011 Topps Lineage 3D set ? It is a nice set, only 15 cards. Already had a wrapper but needed the easel, which are hard to come by these days

Larry may be right but I found the blacked out Smith to be very tough. The big head prototypes are very tough. Just the Moryn below

Pepsi was mentioned earlier. This is a little outside pre 1980 but although the first 3 Yanks and header can be found without too much problem, the rest were unissued and are very tough. I think I am still missing one, likely and OF guy

Topps, at least until the point they sold to Eisner's group and changed things up and started doing intentionally what had previously just been part of their daily operations, was still putting out tough sets and tests and goof ups and etc. into the 2000's. There are a number of scarce and rare post 1980 cards and sets out there-I just use that as a cutoff since 1980 is the end of the monopoly era.

76 Hostess green/yellow instead of red/blue.
I got a small batch of them from a friends neighbor in maybe 1979 or 80. Traded a McCovey Washington for them, and stupidly then traded half the batch to the local dealer for another McCovey. They have every appearance of being issued on boxes. But are screened entirely differently from the regular ones, and the batch included numbers over 150. I've never seen any others. There was a fairly local Hostess bakery so maybe some test prints got out to the packaging line somehow. I don't think the kids family had any connection to Hostess, I'd have probably asked since I was always after the shelf ads or any other promotional stuff I could find. The RC cola guy promised he'd send something but never did. I also met a Topps rep who claimed that he had boxes of some fairly tough stuff that he'd kept rather than put it out with retailers. (greatest moments, 74 deckle, that sort of stuff.) None was for sale since he figured it would be worth a lot more later on. I've always wondered if that stuff ever turned up. Steve B |

Love those. I'll put up a scan of a Banks and Santo when I get home.

I think the tougher 3-D's were cards that ended up damaged in production. My Maloney No Dugout, like all known examples of this variation, has two pull marks on it that are pretty severe for an issued product(lower left bottom border) and I'll bet the damage to some other cards was too much to let them be issued. They could also have had short prints, of course. ![]() Last edited by toppcat; 03-26-2016 at 03:41 PM. |

Yes, I have seen several of the 2011 Topps Lineage 3Ds. I was fortunate to be able to get a Mantle in PSA 10. I just love that card. Since purchasing the rights to produce Mickey Mantle cards, Topps wisely chooses to use stirring photos from Mantle's early years. Two most attractive exceptions are the 2012 Gypsy Queen, with Mick rubbing the side of his pants while at bat. Looks like a live telecast of NBC Game of the Week! The other I love is that 2011 Topps Mantle 3-D, with the shot of Mickey appearing to be from the late stages of his career--where he would always use a batting helmet, and frequently wear the undershirt with the black long sleeves. He is seen beginning to drop his bat, as he watches one of his titanic home runs sail into the far reaches of the bleachers. Those moments were becoming fewer, and he relished them. Nice shot. I think of that card as precisely what a 1968 Topps 3-D would have looked, had Topps chosen to make one of him. ![]() Thanks again for sharing some of your wonderful collection with us, bro. ---Brian Powell |

1958 Kahn's - I know the Clemente is insanely scarce - I believe a few of the other players as well. |
