To go along with what others have said, this was my first year diving in to pre-war, and this site and all ya'll have been wonderful and a huge help. From advice I've been given, to deals I've made, to just reading old threads and learning, you guys have been an invaluable resource.

Since I didn't have any goals to start the year, I'll give my two favorite pickups of 2016:

1. Hal Chase T206 Pink Portrait from Glenn here on the boards (for my T206 no hat portrait set)
2. T206 Scoops Carey Old Mill (for my pre-war Memphis collection)

Here are some things I'd like to knock off in 2017:

1. Finish a front run of white border Memphis players (T206 Cranston and T213-2 Cranston, Carey, Schlei, and Willett)

2. Obtain (2) T210-8 Memphis players

3. Add at least 15 new cards to my T206 portrait set, with at least 2 HOFers

4. Add one copy of each: N162 (baseball), N172, N300

I think that should be enough to keep my busy throughout the new year. Thanks again to everybody that has helped and shared info along the way. Happy Holidays to you all!

My 2016 goals were,

T206 Matty white cap - completed
T206 lajoie throw or bat with a tougher back - not yet. Hopefully 2017
T206 Young bare hand - completed
E92 Matty Croft's Cocoa - failed. But I did score a nice T206 AB 350 Matty

Oh, would also like to add a Cobb bat off to finish the quartet. - completed

I usually end up with cards I had no intention of buying so we shall see what 2016 brings.

2016 ended up bringing,

'13 National Game Grover Alexander
T206 Speaker
'15 CJ Eddie Collins
'31 W517 Ruth
And a bunch or post war cards

None of these were on my radar, except maybe the Speaker.

2017 Goals...

Should be to spend less money but we'll see how that goes.
T206 HOF'ers with tougher backs.
'41 PB or '49 Leaf DiMaggio
Joe Jackson card

Other than that I'm sure there will be cards I unexpectedly had to have.

Oh - attend the National in Chicago this year.

Good luck to all in 2017

This was my entry for last year: "Keeping it very simple this year - one Old Judge "A" list player and one Old Judge "B" list player. I'll be happy to hit 50% of that target."

Through unbelievable good fortune I absolutely crushed my goal. I scored a total of 5 "A" and "B" list players including the Arundel and Cahill poses to match my glass plate negatives (thanks David Bryan) and a certain white whale from Steve Hart! That was way beyond my wildest imagination, but apparently the stars were aligned just right.

There are still 11 players on my "A" list and 7 players on my "B" list, but more than half of them (all but one "A" list ) are pipe dreams. I'll consider myself quite lucky to knock off 2 "B" list players in the coming 12 months.

2016 Goals:

(1) Continue to prune back collection and focus more on tough Ruth cards, trying to obtain 1-2 "big" cards (not necessarily Ruth). - Check. I'm very satisfied with my progress on this front. Although I sold or traded off some of my key Ruth cards (1921 E121, Wm Paterson, 1929 Star Player Candy), I also picked up some tough ones (1921 W575-1 H. Johnson, 1923-24 Exhibits). On the non-Ruth front, I picked up a Brunners Bread Cobb and Ramly Walter Johnson.

(2) Continue to make progress on small sets (W519-1, W519-2, W521, W590). - Check. This has been very slow going since I only picked up two cards this year for these sets. One in the W519-1 and one in W590. However, that single pickup (Ray Schalk) in W519 Type 1 finished that set, so I'm happy that I finally completed that one.

2017 Goals:

This is going to be continue to be more of the same as the last few years.

(1) Continue to prune back collection and focus more on tough Ruth cards, trying to obtain 1-2 "big" cards (not necessarily Ruth). The big ones here are that I would like to obtain a 1915 CJ Cobb and a E93/94 Cobb, both with decent eye appeal.

(2) Continue to make progress on small sets (W519-2, W521, W590).

2016 has been the best year of my life so far--by God's grace, I am growing in my faith, spending more and more time with family, and have been able to keep two jobs . Collecting wise, I made some goals over on Blowout...Here were the goals:
- A Michael Jordan UD auto (couldn't do it)
- MJ Fleer rookie, graded <5 (nope)
- A nice laundry tag (nope)
- An NBA logoman (nada)
- A booklet of even higher quality than the one I currently possess. (nope)

Hmm...some of these goals should have been doable. Weird thing--I posted this in early April, and also became a member of Net54 in early April. I found that my collecting goals changed quite a bit! I was done with the fluctuating prices and inconsistencies with modern cards, so I shifted to vintage. Never looking back! Here are my biggest accomplishments 2016!
  1. First T206 purchased
  2. Completed my mini-set of the SL portraits I wanted
  3. Added a 'Stache to my collection!

In 2017, I hope to:
  1. Reach 12 HoF portraits (currently at 4)
  2. Finish my Johnny Kling back run (currently at 2/11)
  3. Complete a successful SGC submission
  4. Purchase a "rare back" (Hindu/Brights/BL)

I'll trade anything I've got... CJ Cobb etc.

PM Me!

Merry Christmas!

A laundry tag!?!?! I am glad you changed course. Our collecting goals change as we learn more about this great hobby. In 2016, I sold off a few cards I simply lost interest in, and used the proceeds to focus on Ty Cobb. This coming year, I hope to continue to build on my early Cobb collection by adding a 1907 Wolverine News (batting) to complete my 1907 Cobb Post Card run. Would love to add another tough Cobb post card like a Detroit Free Press or a Rose.

Can you share your "white whale" Kevin !?!

I too had a great 2016, meeting my N333 Newsboy goal (one Detroit, one other team) and a player cabinet to boot. I also obtained a nice Detroit N173, a couple new N172s and some upgrades. I also have a special package under the Christmas tree from Graig Kreindler that will surely be a 2016 favorite as well.

2017 Goals, more of the same, obtain:
- N333 Detroit
- N333 other team
- N172 Detroit (still need many 1888 & 1889 poses)
- N173 or N175 Detroit

One copy from each of the four bullets would be a very good year.

I had a great year, but more in vintage, less in prewar. I got two sets knocked off that I had not even started...a very nice 1967 Topps and a less nice 1964 sets both completed.

Probably my best prewar pickup was a nice Broadleaf Davidson.

1. t206 - picked up an Uzit and Sweeney no B.
2. t205 - picked up PSA 6 Joss
3. Clemente - picked up PSA 7 Punchout (highest graded)
4. Picked up a BGS 9.5 Fleer Jordan RC

Goals for 2017
1. Pick up at least one new t206/back
2. Pick up at least one of the four remain t205s to complete basic set
3. Pick up at least one new Clemente card.

Met my goals and then some. Added to my E121-80 and E121-120 1921 World Series collection. Found a rare Slim Sallee card in better grade than the one I had been offered at 1/4th cost, upgraded my Quinn, no W572 action so set is getting boring to me, Found a game piece of my great great Uncle Elmer Miller, maintained my T207 with various reverses and started a T205 Cubs with diffent reverses and up to 128/152 possibilities. Also went to a Cubs/ Dodgers playoff game where the Cubs won 10 to 2. Watched the Cubs win the World Series.

Goals for 2017, continue adding to T205 Cubs reverses ( need 25 more), look for T207 Cubs Napoleon backs, continue E121 World Series set, anything Elmer Miller, possibly sell W572 set if I can move it in bulk for the right price.

In general, a great year and hopefully more to come.
