I love the offbeat and non-sports cards. I mentioned the Howard Hughes card from the 1936 Heinz Aviators set in one of the other REA threads; I was blown away by the action on that card on the final day. The Howard Hughes card in that set is a great rarity, and doesn't come up for auction too often. In 2014, a PSA 5 of the Hughes cards sold for $657 with Legendary. In 2012, a PSA 4 sold for $478 with Legendary.
The Hughes card at REA was a PSA "5" ended at $2,040 with the BP. Yikes, non-sports cards don't often triple like that in three years, especially in mid-grade.

A Wildfire Shulte game used Cubs bat from early 1900's for $13,200! That's insane. It's a $400-$800 bat. Makes no sense.

The green Cobb PSA 2 that went for 5400. I am willing to bet someone thinks they can get the tape residue off the back and turn the card into a 4 to make a few thousand dollars on the card.
Keep those eyes peeled. Last edited by PhillipAbbott79; 05-02-2017 at 08:54 AM. |

Pete that 51 Mantle has almost perfect color, registration, and centering. Almost unheard of in any grade for that card. The corners look like a 6 or 7. Some light staining which is probably less noticeable in hand appears to be all that down grades. Certainly looks high end to me.
The kind of card that appeals to collectors such as myself, including a few board members here, as well as someone who might be thinking they can clean it up and get a bump.

In any case, buy what you like, but I don't think this "centered Mantle" fetish is going to last. Not to the tune of 3x what one would pay for a nice card of equivalent grade just a little worse centered.

Compare the PSA 4 that just sold in Sunday night's at REA for $15k+ w/ BP to the one listed in BST: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=238944
The REA Mantle's hammer price makes the one listed in BST look like a good deal. PS - I have no stake in the BST Mantle (or the one sold in REA), but I do have the 51 Bowman Mantle in a PSA 5 that I will gladly sell for $18k based on these prices...!
