These are the best cards?

Wow.

This set is even uglier than I remembered!

What a truly putrid offering by Topps. Right up there with 1981 and 1979.

This one is my favorite 1978 card just because it reminds me of both the 1982 Topps Seaver All-Star card and a specific Christy Mathewson photo - a copy of which I have been searching for a number of years.

Does anyone remember the picture I mean?

There as several of Christy in his 'warm-up coat' - but the one I'm looking for is like these two in that it appears to be a cold windy day causing a kind of worn expression on his face.

I agree my favorite card in the set especially if you can find a clean copy well centered without any of those pesky print issues.

I tend to agree with this. The card design is crappy. HUGE script team names. Borders within borders within borders? Really? And what's up with Willie Montanez's name? They had enough room for ROLLIE FINGERS but not WILLIE MONTANEZ?

And while the selection of photos themselves is decent (some have been shown here), the actual printing execution of the photos is downright awful. It's not even a technology thing. Look at the printing quality of the '60s cards and compare it with these. It's almost like Topps was doing laser printing in the '60s and decided to revert back to dot-matrix for the late '70s. Or it could be the photographers were only provided Kodak Instamatics to take the picture. Who knows.

1978 was my first set - in fact the first cards I ever owned came as a small uncut panel in a spring 1978 edition of Dynamite Magazine. I've always felt the images in the set were, generally, some of the best of that era. Here are a few favorites (and I have a lot).

First the Joy of the Game - Rice, Simmons and Lopez, all just looking like they're happy to be there.

Next up - the catchers. Looking determined and gritty, real ballplayers...
