You'll be able to post this again in 19 days if you want. Wagner actually collected his 3,000th hit on June 28, 1914 in the second game of a doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds, with Pete Schneider on the mound.

The difference in date comes from an early error in his hit totals, which led people to believe he collected his 3,000th hit on June 9, 1914. In reality, that was hit 2,990 he collected that day, a double off of Erskine Mayer.

The numbers were updated at a much later date, which lowered Wagner from 3,430 career hits down to 3,420 (there was also a brief time many years ago when his hit total was believed to be 3,415, but research corrected that). The extra ten ghost hits added to his earlier total were stats from prior to 1914, which changed his actual 3,000th hit date to almost three weeks later.

Cool, interesting postcard, but what in the heck is Honus recruiting these kids for...the Dawson Springs Dunce Club?

Always wished I had worked on this run a bit more 10+ years ago when I got most of these, when it was more affordable to do so!

Interesting info on the 3000 hit date, great excuse to bring all these pieces back in a little while. My only Wagner at the moment although getting very fond of his various postcards.

Sure looks that way, right? I found this from a Times Leader article:

Quote:
Honus Wagner walked the streets of Dawson Springs in those days, and managed to pull together a rag-tag bunch of youth for some pick-up baseball, and life instruction. He called them his “Young Recruits.” Wagner and his Pirate mates were good to the town of Dawson Springs, and could be found at many local gatherings. Wagner and his buddies often fished at the Mill Dam, right beside Riverside Park, walking the short distance from the New Century Hotel to the banks of Tradewater.
