The guy went past 4 or 5 empty seats to get a home run ball for his son on (or almost on) his birthday. He didn't appear to do anything crazy to get it - no obvious pushing someone out of his way or grabbing it out of someone's hands. I've seen people at games do way worse things to get a ball than this guy did.

I'm not sure how many people, I would hope a majority, upon seeing the man give the ball to a child would have just smiled, waved and walked away. That's not a battle, even if you win, that you will ever win in the court of public opinion.
Just ask the guy who snatched the signed tennis players hat away from a kid.

I guess we all have different point of views, mine is the guy was well within his rights to gather the ball, she was out of line ,period. Otherwise you are saying no one can get a ball unless it is hit directly to you, with your rump seated, and not even sure you can reach for it.

Default bad internet behavior

Thomas (icurnmedic)-

1) The internet rage mob were out of line for misidentifying the woman.

2) The guy was out of line. I get the distinct feeling many of the people
defending his behavior on this site, would not have been happy with him
weaseling past to grab a ball you were going to pick up, then gleefully
pretending to be invisible (and playing the victim) immediately after.

3) The woman was out of line, far too confrontational. It may well be,
however, that she too had someone who would like to own a HR ball
(a grandchild, maybe).

4) In short, bad behavior by all the adults involved. Phillies did the right
thing though. Main lesson is we live in a society that is largely graceless.

I don't think the guy was out of line by much.
Make it a bit different, we've all seen home runs into the stands at poorly attended games. Some even hit into a totally empty section. There's usually a bit of a race to get to it.
So what would you have them do? Maybe utilize the hr distance measurer to determine who was closest and announce things like "guy in the green hoodie was closest, it's his ball"

Baseball is getting silly enough.

Agree about the internet detectives who are wrong this time, and the woman.
