REA surprise outcomes?

I love the offbeat and non-sports cards. I mentioned the Howard Hughes card from the 1936 Heinz Aviators set in one of the other REA threads; I was blown away by the action on that card on the final day. The Howard Hughes card in that set is a great rarity, and doesn't come up for auction too often. In 2014, a PSA 5 of the Hughes cards sold for $657 with Legendary. In 2012, a PSA 4 sold for $478 with Legendary.

The Hughes card at REA was a PSA "5" ended at $2,040 with the BP. Yikes, non-sports cards don't often triple like that in three years, especially in mid-grade.

A Wildfire Shulte game used Cubs bat from early 1900's for $13,200! That's insane. It's a $400-$800 bat. Makes no sense.

The ungraded 1948 leaf wax pack went for almost 50k. Hard to imagine pulling that much value out - but this probably means it never gets opened. Anyway it might be a record price for a single wax pack. The high series 52 packs only hit 18k last i checked.

The Leaf pack price is really intriguing. I can't relate to that type of collecting at all. You're paying major dollar for cards that will never see the outside of that wrapper. Boy that's satisfying!

Yeah, I can see a life long love affair with Mickey Mantle leading to a six figure purchase of his card if you have the money to spare, but is anyone emotionally attached to Leaf packaging? Of course someone could just figure it's an investment. Wouldn't be my investment though.

I don't get it either. I know people do collect unopened packs but I would enjoy opening one and going for the big hit. I'd be fine knowing I will probably lose money, but not at anywhere close to 50k. Imagine getting say a robinson that graded a 7, and an off center paige that came back a 4. You still lose 20k.
